The album is often hailed as his breakthrough effort and was a major success for Michael Jackson.
In 1995, the RIAA certified Off the Wall at 7x Platinum for sales of 7 million in the United States alone, and the album has thus far sold 20 million copies worldwide.

Quincy Jones, the musical director for Motown's film adaptation of The Wiz (in which Jackson starred as the Scarecrow), served as the album's producer, with lyrics and music by Jackson, Rod Temperton, Stevie Wonder, and Paul McCartney, among others.

Off the Wall was a smash success. It reached #3 in the Billboard album charts, according to Billboard, it was the third best-selling album of 1980 in the United States and the best-selling R&B album of the year.

On October 16, 2001, a special edition of the album was released. It contained some bonus material, including the original demo of "Don't Stop 'Til You Get Enough" and "Working Day and Night", both recorded at home in 1978, plus interviews with Quincy Jones and Rod Temperton. The set also contains a new booklet featuring previously unseen photos, lyrics and additional info.

Off the Wall is a very special album to me. Every time I hear it, I feel hapiness and a cool sensation , like summer breeze and something like that. I was born 4 months after its release, and I love it!

This is my favorite album after Bad (Bad is my fave) and I do thoroughly enjoy comparing Michael's younger voice to his mature and completely different voice he has today. This is also a completely different style to the likes of 'Bad', 'Dangerous' and 'Invincible', yet it's still just as incredible. Highlights for me are 'Rock With You', 'Get On The Floor', 'Burn This Disco Out' and 'Working Day and Night'.

Off the wall fue quizás el primer disco en grande de Michael Jackson, ya que los que editó bajo el sello Motown no se diferencian tanto de lo discos que había grabado con sus hermanos. Cabe destacar que este disco fue producido por Quincy Jones, y contaba con colaboraciones tan importantes como Paul McCartney y Stevie Wonder. Michael Jackson en este disco por primera vez cantó sus composiciones destacando el sencillo Don't stop til you get enough que es cantada con un agradable falsete. Y por supuesto no puedo olvidar la fabulosa Working day and night que presenta ritmos latinos y produce continuos sobresaltos de principio a fin. Otra de mis favoritas es Get on the Floor muy bailabla estilo funky, con mucho violín que presenta todos los elementos presentes en la música disco. Gran disco
