The Motown Solo Collection to nowe, trzypłytowe wydawnictwo zawierające wszystkie utwory, które Jackson nagrał dla Motown w latach 1971-75 oraz te, które zostały wydane przez wytwórnię już po wygaśnięciu kontraktu Michaela. Początki kariery Jacksona nie były łatwe, ponieważ Jackson 5 byli wówczas u szczytu kariery. Ale kiedy okazało się, że można pogodzić występy w zespole oraz solową karierę (tak jak to uczynił Donny Osmond) dano mu szanse spróbowania sił w nieco poważniejszym repertuarze. Owocem tej decyzji były cztery albumy solowe wydane w latach 70. oraz kompilacje z niepublikowanym materiałem z lat 80., których podsumowaniem jest ta kolekcja.
