Written by Michael with Rodney 'Darkchild' Jerkins, Fred Jerkins III, LaShawn Daniels and Nora Payne, and recorded for his album, Invincible, issued in October 2001.

"My association with Michael came about after I was introduced to Carole Bayer Sager by Atlantic VP, Craig Kaman," said Jerkins. "She asked me if I would like to come to her house, and write with her and Michael - so I said, Cool! I flew to Los Angeles, and sure enough was there at her house... every time I see him, I tell him over and over - it's just incredible just to be here working with you, knowing how crazy I was about you when I was a kid."

"We knew that it (You Rock My World) was going to be a corner-stone of the album, and it set the mood and the feel for the rest of the music," said engineer Bruce Swedien. "A lot of times, a real good piece of music will never get on the album, only because it just doesn't fit. You know Michael loves drama - if the music doesn't have drama, if it's just a derivative of a piece of music without drama, Michael's not going to go for it."

Spoken into by Michael and Chris Tucker - Tucker came into the studio to do a voice party for Invincible, but it wasn't until Rodney Jerkins heard it and thought it fitted the mood of the song, that it was agreed to use it for You Rock My World.

Lead single from the album - however, its release to radio stations had to be brought forward, after two New York stations broke the embargo Sony Music had placed on it.

It officially premiered on Michael's web-site on 24th August 2001.

Hit no.2 in the UK, and achieved no.10 on the Hot 100 and no.13 on the R&B singles chart in the US - on the strength of airplay alone, as no commercial single was released.

Fred Bronson, Billboard magazine's chart expert, felt it was "a huge mistake" not to release the song as a single in the States: "Certainly, if a commercial single had been available, it would have peaked higher - perhaps even at no.1."

No.1 in France, Portugal and Spain.

Jay-Z was chosen by Michael to remix the song because: "he's hip, the new thing, and he's with the kids today. They like his work. He's tapped into the nerve of popular culture. It just made good business sense."
