It was recorded by the Jackson 5, as their debut Motown single and for their debut album, Diana Ross Presents The Jackson 5, released in December 1969 in the US and March 1970 in the UK. It hit no.1 on both the Hot 100 and R&B single chart in the USA, and achieved no.2 in the UK.

It was ranked no.9 on MYV and Rolling Stone magazine's poll in November 2000, to find the '100 Greatest Pop Songs' of all time.
