Written by Siedah Garrett and Glen Ballard, and recorded by Michael for his album, Bad, issued in September 1987.

It hit no.1 on both American charts, but surprisingly struggled to no.21 in the UK.

A promo short film, which didn't feature Michael, spliced footage of people who have endeavoured to 'make that change' with notorious figures - people like Martin Luther King, John F. Kennedy and Mother Teresa, plus Adolf Hitler and Idi Amin. Directed by Don Wilson.

It is also recorded by co-writer Siedah Garrett in 2003, for her solo album, SIEDAH!. "This song is very special to me," said Siedah. "We (her and Ballard) sat down and almost instantly, we came up with the music, lyric and melody for the first verse and chorus... we knew that afternoon that we had something special."

Man In The Mirror - Lyrics

I'm Gonna Make A Change,
For Once In My Life
It's Gonna Feel Real Good,
Gonna Make A Difference
Gonna Make It Right . . .

As I, Turn Up The Collar On My
Favourite Winter Coat
This Wind Is Blowin' My Mind
I See The Kids In The Street,
With Not Enough To Eat
Who Am I, To Be Blind?
Pretending Not To See
Their Needs
A Summer's Disregard,
A Broken Bottle Top
And A One Man's Soul
They Follow Each Other On
The Wind Ya' Know
'Cause They Got Nowhere
To Go
That's Why I Want You To
Know

I'm Starting With The Man In
The Mirror
I'm Asking Him To Change
His Ways
And No Message Could Have
Been Any Clearer
If You Wanna Make The World
A Better Place
(If You Wanna Make The
World A Better Place)
Take A Look At Yourself, And
Then Make A Change
(Take A Look At Yourself, And
Then Make A Change)
(Na Na Na, Na Na Na, Na Na,
Na Nah)

I've Been A Victim Of A Selfish
Kind Of Love
It's Time That I Realize
That There Are Some With No
Home, Not A Nickel To Loan
Could It Be Really Me,
Pretending That They're Not
Alone?

A Willow Deeply Scarred,
Somebody's Broken Heart
And A Washed-Out Dream
(Washed-Out Dream)
They Follow The Pattern Of
The Wind, Ya' See
Cause They Got No Place
To Be
That's Why I'm Starting With
Me
(Starting With Me!)

I'm Starting With The Man In
The Mirror
(Ooh!)
I'm Asking Him To Change
His Ways
(Ooh!)
And No Message Could Have
Been Any Clearer
If You Wanna Make The World
A Better Place
(If You Wanna Make The
World A Better Place)
Take A Look At Yourself And
Then Make A Change
(Take A Look At Yourself And
Then Make A Change)

I'm Starting With The Man In
The Mirror
(Ooh!)
I'm Asking Him To Change His
Ways
(Change His Ways-Ooh!)
And No Message Could've
Been Any Clearer
If You Wanna Make The World
A Better Place
(If You Wanna Make The
World A Better Place)
Take A Look At Yourself And
Then Make That . . .
(Take A Look At Yourself And
Then Make That . . .)
Change!

I'm Starting With The Man In
The Mirror,
(Man In The Mirror-Oh
Yeah!)
I'm Asking Him To Change

(You Gotta Get It Right, While
You Got The Time)
('Cause When You Close Your
Heart)
You Can't Close Your . . .Your
Mind!
(Then You Close Your . . .
Mind!)
That Man, That Man, That
Man, That Man
With That Man In The Mirror
(Man In The Mirror, Oh Yeah!)

Gonna Feel Real Good Now!
Yeah Yeah! Yeah Yeah!
Yeah Yeah!
Na Na Na, Na Na Na, Na Na,

(Ooooh . . .)
Oh No, No No . . .
I'm Gonna Make A Change
It's Gonna Feel Real Good!
Come On!
(Change . . .)
Just Lift Yourself
You Know
You've Got To Stop It.

i couldn't agree more. it's one of mjj's songs i don't get tired listening to. in fact, it plays so heavy on my phone. what makes michael songs different is that he always, always put his heart and soul- no matter what the genre of his music is...

Zapisał siedem singli, z których pięć wspięło się na szczyty list przebojów: "I Just Can't Stop Loving You", "Bad", "The Way You Make Me Feel", "Man in the Mirror" oraz "Dirty Diana". Dwadzieścia lat po premierze, Bad nadal trzyma rekord największej ilości "numerów jeden" na liście Billboardu. Album rozszedł się w ponad 30 mln egzemplarzy

Beautifull uplifting song, again a classic. Michael made this his own. A trade mark track, a gosbal r n b epic. Love this song on the Bad tour, just moved me, goose bumps, tears and laughter all in one. Make that Change, it made me look at myself. CLASSIC

Man in the Mirror" to wydany w 1988 singel z albumu Michaela Jacksona zatytułowanego Bad z 1987 roku.
Był to kolejny singel, który dotarł do miejsca pierwszego. Przebywał przez dwa tygodnie na liście Billboard Hot 100 przez dwa tygodnie i został nominowany do statuetki Grammy w kategorii Record of the Year (Nagranie Roku). Na gali wręczenia nagród Jackson wykonał ten utwór oraz "The Way You Make Me Feel".
Utwór został napisany przez duet Glena Ballarda i Siedah Garrett (Garret śpiewa wokale w tle, śpiewa także główny wokal żeński w utworze "I Just Can't Stop Loving You"). Udział w nagraniu wziął też chór Andrae Crouch Choir, który nadarł utworowi patetyczny wydźwięk.
Oprócz wykonania na Grammy Awards w 1988 roku, "Man in the Mirror" było wykonywane przez drugi etap Bad World Tour, a także regularnie przez całą trasę Dangerous World Tour. 16 lipca 1995 Jackson wykonał utwór na koncercie w Brunei.
"Man in the Mirror" jest stałym gościem wszelkich składanek z największymi przebojami artysty, jednak nie znalazło się w boksie "Visionary: The Video Singles".
Teledysk do piosenki nie zawiera żadnych nowych ujęć Michaela Jacksona tańczącego na scenie. Ukazane są w nim obrazy przemocy, zwieńczone eksplozją bomby atomowej, natomiast druga część wyra "Man In The Mirror" to czwarty singel z albumu, który dotarł do miejsca pierwszego w Stanach Zjednoczonych.

When Michael passed away, in NZ it was on the Friday. I was walking around numb, trying to talk it out with fellow fans, trying to get rid of the lump in my throat but nothing would budge. i couldnt eat, couldnt sleep. then on the sunday (admittedly a bit hungover from the MJ party the night before) this video came on TV. and that broke the flood gates. and i still cant stop crying. so when i hear this song, my memories arent just of my childhood and a really cool song that inspired me to be a social worker.. but also of the man who wanted the world to change with him and pay attention to the disharmony in the world. and how that man is going to be so missed and had left a huge hole in the world and our hearts. i love you michael. you're still alive in my heart.
