Riding high on the wild success of the Jackson 5, Motown ringleader Berry Gordy assembled every single notable production team member and songwriter in his arsenal to contribute to the solo debut of Michael.

Released on September 13, 1971. It includes the song of the same name, which was released in the fall of 1971 as Jackson's debut solo single.

By the time Got to Be There was released, much had changed in the Jackson dynamic, none the least Michael's voice.
This album launched three chart singles: a cover of the bubblegum classic "Rockin' Robin," Leon Ware's "I Wanna Be Where You Are," and the title track.

The album peaked at number fourteen on the US pop albums chart and number 5 on the US R&B album chart when it was released. The album also included covers of Bill Withers' "Ain't No Sunshine" and James Taylor & Carole King's "You've Got a Friend".

Got to Be There kept Gordy as king of the sound of young America.

Ben was the second full-length solo album.

Released in August 1972, eight months after his auspicious debut as a soloist, the album featured more ballads than his debut.

The album sold on the strength of Jackson's first number-one pop single with the title track and was named as the album title to help boost up album sales.

None of the other songs from the album were issued as singles and one of the songs, "In Our Small Way", originally issued on Got to Be There, was featured on this album.

Michael Jackson stunned everyone by scoring a huge hit with a song about a rat on this 1972 release.

He was just beginning to make his way outside the family unit, and the single actually did better on the pop side than on the R&B charts, topping the pop list but peaking at number five on the R&B survey.

The remainder of the album was good to above-average pop, establishing for any doubters that Jackson was going to succeed, indeed thrive, on his own.

Music and Me was the third solo, released in 1973 on the Motown label.

At this point, michael Jackson was one of the few artists who had success as a member of a popular singing group and as a soloist, especially considering he now had four Top 40 hit singles at the point of this release, which occurred in April of 1973.

But at this point, Michael, who turned fifteen in August, was growing frustrated with Motown's lack of direction concerning the material he was recording thus making the songs he recorded for "Music and Me" seem almost shallow even at his most soulful.

Jackson was also experiencing vocal changes as he came in and out of soprano and was now, at least for this album, a high-pitched tenor. Also low promotion because Michael was currently on tour can be named for this albums low success and only one single.

The chart showing at #92 on the Pop Albums Chart proved to be a sign, at least by the label, that the public was growing tired of Jackson's image as a child singer as he matured into a teen idol during the year. And the leading single, "With a Child's Heart" (originally recorded by Stevie Wonder), was the only song released off it.

Because of the low sucess of this album it was decided that Motown would focused more on getting the Jackson 5's career together and not focused on Michael's solo career until the brothers got back on track(this is the reason why Michael's next album wasn't released till nearly two years later in 75, and why a planned 74 solo album was shelved).

There's little wonder that Jackson at this point began to openly express his desires to expand his horizons and try a fresher, more contemporary approach.

Michael Jackson's fourth and final new studio album for Motown came nearly two years after its predecessor, Music and Me.

The album was Jackson's fourth as a solo artist and would end up being his final album released with Motown before he and his brothers (The Jackson 5) left for CBS Records a year later. This album brought upon a change in sound for the sixteen-year-old adapting a smoother soul sound that would be a catalyst to later solo records on Epic.

It was a more mature effort for the 16-year-old singer but lacked the contemporary dance style that had given Michael and his brothers a career rebirth with "Dancing Machine" the year before. The album did spawn two minor chart singles, "We're Almost There" and "Just a Little Bit of You" (both produced by Brian Holland of the Holland-Dozier-Holland production team), and a third track, "One Day in Your Life," would chart as a reissue six years later.

But though Michael sang appealingly, the arrangements were noticeably similar to many older Motown charts, and there was little here to hint that, four years hence, on his next solo album, Off the Wall, Jackson would emerge as a major star.

The album is often hailed as his breakthrough effort and was a major success for Michael Jackson.
In 1995, the RIAA certified Off the Wall at 7x Platinum for sales of 7 million in the United States alone, and the album has thus far sold 20 million copies worldwide.

Quincy Jones, the musical director for Motown's film adaptation of The Wiz (in which Jackson starred as the Scarecrow), served as the album's producer, with lyrics and music by Jackson, Rod Temperton, Stevie Wonder, and Paul McCartney, among others.

Off the Wall was a smash success. It reached #3 in the Billboard album charts, according to Billboard, it was the third best-selling album of 1980 in the United States and the best-selling R&B album of the year.

On October 16, 2001, a special edition of the album was released. It contained some bonus material, including the original demo of "Don't Stop 'Til You Get Enough" and "Working Day and Night", both recorded at home in 1978, plus interviews with Quincy Jones and Rod Temperton. The set also contains a new booklet featuring previously unseen photos, lyrics and additional info.

According to the Guinness World Records, Thriller is the world's best-selling album of all time. Sales of the album are over 104 million copies.
The album is also notable for being one of only three albums to remain in the top 10 of the Billboard 200 for one full year, spending 80 consecutive weeks in the top 10, 37 of which were at number one.
Thriller is also the first album of only three in history to produce seven Billboard Hot 100 top-ten singles.
The album continues to sell an estimated 60,000 units in the United States per year.

In February 1984, Michael Jackson was nominated for twelve Grammy Awards — of which he won eight — breaking the record for the most Grammy Awards won in a single year. Seven were for Thriller and the other for the E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial storybook.
That same year, Jackson also won eight American Music Awards and the "Special Award of Merit" and three MTV Video Music Awards.
Thriller also helped to bring music from African-American artists back into mainstream radio for the first time since the mid-1970s.

Recorded between April and November 1982, Thriller was the second of Michael Jackson's solo albums to be produced by Quincy Jones. Of the nine tracks that came to be on the final project of the album, Jackson wrote four.

The album's first single is "The Girl Is Mine", a duet with Paul McCartney. The album's second single, "Billie Jean" catapulted Jackson and Thriller to the top of the charts. Jackson then performed "Billie Jean" at the Motown 25: Yesterday, Today, Forever special, showing off his signature dance move, the "moonwalk", to an enormous audience.
From there, Jackson's already considerable success grew further. Michael Jackson's reinvention as a crossover artist was complete with his third single, the rock song, "Beat It", which features guitar work by guitarist Eddie Van Halen. Written by Rod Temperton, produced by Quincy Jones, and featuring Vincent Price, "Thriller" is one of Jackson's signature songs, in no small part because of its legendary 14-minute music video, regarded as the greatest music video of all time.

Farewell My Summer Love, like One Day in Your Life before it, was a compilation of archived Michael Jackson recordings released by Motown in 1984 as a "lost" Michael Jackson solo album that was meant to be released in 74 but was later held off because of the Jackson's Five reborn success with Dancing Machine.

The nine songs featured on the album were originally recorded in 1973 but had not been previously released. To give the album a more 1980s sound, Motown remixed the songs and added all new musical overdubs. The task of updating the sound was given to musicians Tony Peluso, Michael Lovesmith and Steve Barri. Together with drummer Mike Baird, they recorded new guitar, keyboard, percussion drum parts for the songs. The album reached #46 on Billboard's pop album chart and #9 on the UK albums chart.

The title track was also released as a single in May, 1984. It became a Top 40 hit in the US, reaching #38, and a Top 10 hit in the United Kingdom, reaching #7. At the time, Jackson was riding high on the success of his best-selling Thriller album. A follow up single, "Girl You're So Together" was a top 40 hit in the UK.

The album was released only to be forgotten years later. Like One Day in Your Life, Farewell My Summer Love has never seen a re-release, although the title track is available on several of Jackson's greatest hits collections. In particular, Motown's comprehensive Michael Jackson Anthology features the song "Farewell My Summer Love" in its 1984 remix, as well as "Don't Let it Get You Down", "Call on Me" and "To Make My Father Proud" in their original 1973 versions.

After the monumental success of Thriller, Michael Jackson and co-producer/collaborator Quincy Jones produced a slicker funk/dance confection.
Bad is currently certified at 8x Platinum by the RIAA in the United States, and worldwide has sold an estimated 32 million copies. In addition it achieved 5 #1 singles in the U.S., a record that has never been broken.

Michael Jackson set another record with this album, becoming the first (and currently, only) artist to have five songs to hit #1 from one album.

It turned out to be the last collaborative effort by Jackson and Jones.

In September of 1987, Jackson embarked upon his first solo world tour to support this album - The Bad Tour, which saw Jackson during the next sixteen months perform 123 concerts to over 4.4 million fans worldwide.

Dangerous, released in November 1991 has sold approximately 30 million copies worldwide.
Recording sessions for the album began in Los Angeles on June 25, 1990 and ended on October 29, 1991, being the most extensive recording project of Jackson's career until that time.

The album cover was designed by Mark Ryden. The first printing of the album was released as a large box with a picture of Michael Jackson's eyes, which folded open to reveal the normal cover, in pop-up card, with the CD, and booklet in the bottom.

Early sales of the album were record breaking. In the US the album debuted at #1 with 326,500 copies sold. The album spent its four weeks straight at #1 and its first 17 weeks inside the Billboard 200 Top 10. The album managed to spent another week inside the Top 10 in its 65th week in the charts, reaching #10, after Jackon received the Living Legend Award in the 1993 Grammy Awards.
The album really enjoyed a huge boost in sales during those days in early 1993 when MJ also performed at the Super Bowl and gave his famous interview to Oprah Winfrey.
In all, Dangerous spent 117 weeks inside the Billboard 200, 30 weeks more than Bad. The RIAA certified Dangerous at 7x Platinum for 7 million copies. In the UK the album was even more successful.There it spent 23 weeks inside the Top 10.
The sales of the album were of just over 2 million, making Dangerous one of the UK's best selling albums of the nineties.

The first single released from the album, Black or White was an instant success. The album produced a total of 9 singles around the world (the title track was planned as a single for early 1994 but cancelled).
The major hits from the album were "Black or White", "Remember the Time", "In the Closet", "Heal the World", "Who Is It", and "Will You Be There".

Michael Jackson supported the album with the Dangerous World Tour.

A Special Edition of the album appeared in 2001. It was digitally remastered and included a slipcase, a brand new 24-page colorful booklet with revised artwork and previously unseen photos.

In 1993 the album receives numerous music awards including American Music Awards for Best Pop/Rock Album and Soul Train Awards for Best R&B Album. HIStory - Past, Present and Future, Book I , a double-disc album (one half greatest hits, one half studio album), was released in June of 1995 by the Epic Records division of Sony BMG.

The first disc, (HIStory Begins) contains fifteen hit singles from the past fifteen years of Jackson's career to this point. The tracklist includes fourteen U.S. Top 10 singles (nine of which were number-one hits) plus the worldwide top 5 hit "Heal the World". The second disc, (HIStory Continues) contains fifteen previously unreleased recordings, five of which were released as singles.

HIStory debuted at #1 in several countries including the UK and the U.S, while also being nominated for several 1996 Grammy Awards, including Album of the Year, which it did not win however "Scream", expensive science fiction-inspired music video won a Grammy Award for Best Short-Form Music Video.

HIStory was the first album where Michael Jackson showcased his instrumental abilities, playing keyboard and synthesizer, guitar, drums and percussion, as well as lead and backing vocals. He was also more involved in the production of this album, collaborating with producers Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis, Dallas Austin, Bill Bottrell and R. Kelly. Michael also experimented with more genres on this album than on any other album, ranging from orchestral to adult contemporary rhythm and blues to "Gothic pop".

Over 390,000 copies of the album were sold in its first week. In October 1999, the RIAA certified HIStory at 7x Platinum, for shipments of 3.5 million in the United States. Thus far, HIStory has sold an estimated 18 million copies worldwide (36 million units) and is one of the greatest selling multiple-disc album of all times. The first disc of previously released hits was re-released in 2001 selling an estimated 3 million. The album debuted at #1 in most countries around the world.

The first single from the album was "Scream"/"Childhood", released in May 1995 as a double A-side single. "Scream" was a duet between Michael and his younger sister Janet, and "Childhood" was the theme song for the film "Free Willy 2".
"You Are Not Alone", the second HIStory's single, was written and produced by R. Kelly and released in August 1995. It became the first-ever single to debut at number one on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100.
The other successful singles and the HIStory World Tour helped HIStory to go onto sell over 1.5 million copies during its promotional period.

Invincible is an album by Michael Jackson released on October 30, 2001. The cover art of this album was a simple design of just Michael's face. It was available in the standard silver edition, or four limited colours: red, green, yellow and blue.

The album debuted at #1 on the Billboard 200 album chart, and sold 366,000 copies its first week in the U.S.

It had sold 5.4 million copies worldwide in two months and has sold an estimated amount of up to 8 million copies to date. The singles released from the album include "You Rock My World", "Cry", and "Butterflies". The album included guests performances by Carlos Santana, Brandy and posthumous appearances by The Notorious B.I.G. and Rod Serling.

The single "You Rock My World" peaked at #10 in its third week on the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart, and "Butterflies" later peaked at #14 on the same chart, and at #2 for 5 weeks on the R&B/Hip-Hop singles chart. "Heaven Can Wait" also charted at the bottom of the R&B/Hip-Hop charts due to radio airplay without an official release.

On Invincible, Michael Jackson expanded his vocal abilities as well as his instrumental involvement on the album, playing most of the instruments and performing much of the programming tasks in collaboration with producers Rodney Jerkins, Teddy Riley, and Dr. Freeze.
